By the time Libby stumbled into her foyer, it was well after midnight. She felt both exhausted and energized at the same time, adrenaline still thrashing through her veins.

In the library, Jasper squawked on his perch, indignant that she hadn’t let him out of the house for his evening flight. She opened the window, letting a burst of cold air in. His feathers brushed her arm as he flew into the darkness.

She stared out, unseeing, but hearing the sounds of life on the ocean breeze. A shadow had been crawling over her heart for the past few days, a darkness she’d been ignoring. She studied it now, letting the salty cold air play across her face.

It was the ephemeralness of life. From birth to death, the span of one’s existence was like one long breath. A short inhale followed by a long exhale.

The average lifespan expectancy in the United States was roughly eighty years if she remembered right. The growth stage of a human was but a fraction of that. From birth to adulthood, the body expanded, and the mind developed. The short inhale of life.

The many decades that followed were filled with the slow decline of health, the body breaking down. Entropy having its way. Autumn settled in the bones, synapses withering. And eventually, muscle and bone and skin collapsed into winter. The decay was long, but eventually, it won out. But most of one’s existence was filled by this long exhale of life leaving.

She’d seen too much exhaling lately. But tonight, tonight she’d seen the beginnings of a new life.

Closing her eyes, she pulled the sweet, crisp air into her lungs.

Breathe in.
